Most of us do not wake up in the morning intending to become defensive, rigid, or set in our ways. Hardness of heart rarely happens overnight; it creeps in quietly when we are tired, when we have been hurt, or simply when we get comfortable relying on our own strength and experience. But when you look closely at how Jesus moved through the world, He was constantly searching for one specific posture in human lives: a simple, unpretentious willingness to be taught.
When our hearts become soft towards God, everything changes. The pressure to hold all the answers dissipates, and we find ourselves stepping into a space where God can actually do something fresh and real in us.
When Jesus walked the dusty roads of Galilee, He consistently bypassed those who thought they had God completely figured out. He did not build His movement on the self-reliant religious experts who had carved their traditions into cold stone. Instead, He paused beside fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday people who were humble enough to realise they needed Him. A teachable heart begins the moment we stop defending our spiritual reputation and start acknowledging our true appetite for grace.
When we insist on always being right, we unintentionally shut the door to growth. We build subtle armour around our souls to protect ourselves from looking weak or unprepared. Yet real kingdom maturity never looks like having every answer ready; it looks like having a heart tender enough to let Jesus reframe how we think, how we love, and how we live out our daily calling.
This is where the dynamic presence of the Holy Spirit meets us right where we are. When the Spirit draws near, He does not come to expose our faults in order to humiliate or shame us. That is never His tone. From the quiet desert places of our lives straight to the cross, God’s work is always about restoration, gently pointing us back to the freedom found in Jesus.
When the Holy Spirit highlights an area in your character or schedule that needs to shift, it is not a sentence of condemnation—it is an invitation to life. He gently shows us where our grip has grown too tight so that we can unclench our hands and receive what He actually has for us. A teachable spirit is simply a heart that trusts the kindness of the Holy Spirit enough to put down its defences.
When a person or a church family stops trying to force God into a rigid, human template, something beautiful takes place. The Holy Spirit begins to imprint His own living blueprint upon our daily existence. We see this vividly all through the book of Acts: ordinary, flawed people stepping out in holy courage, not because they were perfect, but because they remained utterly open to the Spirit’s direction from moment to moment.
A teachable heart does not leave us passive or uncertain. It releases us into a life of real spiritual power and lasting peace. God’s offer of salvation and renewal is wide open to anyone who will turn to Him, and as we yield our plans to Him, the very same Spirit who empowered the early church begins to move tangibly in our homes, our workplaces, and our local communities today.
You do not need to have your whole journey mapped out today; you simply need to be willing to be led. What is one area of your life right now where the Holy Spirit is gently inviting you to put down your defences and learn from Him again?
