Hey everybody! It is so good to be hanging out with you today. You know, life moves fast. From the minute we wake up in the morning to the second our heads hit the pillow at night, we are constantly running. We’re rushing to get kids out the door, answering emails, hitting deadlines, checking our phones, and trying to keep all the plates spinning. And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, we catch ourselves asking a really heavy, exhausting question: Who am I really, and what makes me count?
The Trap of the Performance Treadmill
Most of us live like our value has to be earned. We tie our worth to our productivity. If we had a great week at work, if our kids behaved, if our bank account looks healthy, and if we checked off every single item on our to-do list, then we feel good about ourselves. We feel successful. We feel like we belong.
But what happens when the week goes off the rails? What happens when you drop the ball, when you mess up, or when you just feel stuck and uninspired? Suddenly, that quiet voice inside gets really loud, telling you that you’re falling short, that you’re letting people down, and that you just aren’t enough.
We jump on this endless treadmill of performance, running harder and harder just to prove that we matter. But the truth is, living for the approval of the world is like chasing the wind. It exhausts you, it drains your joy, and it leaves you empty. Jesus never asked us to live that way. He didn’t come to hand us a heavier checklist; He came to lift the weight right off our shoulders.
Anchored in an Unshakeable Love
Here is where the good news of the Gospel changes everything about how we breathe and move in this world. Our deepest identity isn’t found in what we do, what we produce, or how well we keep it all together. It is found entirely in whose we are.
Think about it. Before you ever checked a box, before you ever worked a job, before you ever made a single mistake or scored a single success, God looked at you and called you His own. His love for you isn’t based on your performance review. It’s rooted in His character. He doesn’t love the polished, put-together version of you while hiding from the messy, struggling version. He loves all of you, right where you are.
Your deepest identity isn’t a prize you earn through effort; it’s a gift you receive through grace.
When that truth finally sinks past your head and settles deep down in your chest, it brings a crazy kind of peace. It means you don’t have to fake perfection anymore. You don’t have to posture or pretend you have it all figured out. You are already fully known, fully forgiven, and fully loved by the Creator of the universe.
Living from Freedom, Not for Approval
So what does that actually look like on a Tuesday afternoon when things get stressful? It looks like stepping off the performance treadmill. It means waking up and remembering that your worth for the day is already secured by grace. You don’t have to earn God’s smile today; you already have it.
When you know you are deeply loved by Him, your whole posture changes. Work stops being a frantic attempt to prove your worth and becomes a way to express gratitude. Mistakes stop feeling like identity crises and start becoming moments to lean into His mercy. You can finally take a deep breath, drop the heavy armor you’ve been carrying around, and just rest in His kindness.
Where are you feeling the pressure to perform and prove your worth right now, and what would it look like to hand that heavy backpack over to Jesus today?
